DOG 01:

How Makeup Empowers Me

Have you ever felt as though everyone was judging your appearance?

As a teenager, I used to be the type of ‘girl’ who does not wear a lot of makeup, afraid to be called out for hiding my bare face behind the mask that I’ve struggled for years to accept.

“We all possess unique features. At least, that’s what I’ve been convincing myself of. But in our current society, I cannot help but feel inadequate, no matter how much I try to convince myself that what I have is more than enough to be loved and accepted — until I discovered makeup. As I’ve grown older, I realized that makeup is a thing for most girls.

Why Do I Wear Makeup?

While others wear makeup to express who they are, I wear it to cover up my blemishes. Nowadays, people are becoming more open-minded about this issue. But it’s still difficult to admit that even though having scars or acne on your face is normal, there’s a little bit of pain that lingers in my body, hoping I was as flawless as the girls I see. Despite the love and support I always receive, no amount of comforting words can relieve the insecurity that has been with me since my teenage years.

But as I’ve learned more about makeup over the years, I have realized that it is more than just covering up blemishes or being insecure; it makes me feel powerful. It helps me to stand up for myself even truthfully; nothing is empowering about wearing lipstick or putting blush — it is about how I can make an impact on people. Whenever I feel like I’m on the verge of having episodes in my head, I wear makeup as my form of therapy; I wear makeup to remind myself that nobody — not even a thing — could break me into pieces.

Although makeup is a temporary tool that keeps my stress and problems away, I enjoy doing it. It doesn’t only make me feel better, but I also get to learn new things.

And, whether you wear makeup or not, it serves as a daily reminder that every individual possesses their own unique beauty.

Always remember that you wear makeup not to impress others, but to feel empowered.

    1. Nice question, Nadine! I was actually looking forward to this. If you are a beginner, you should try first the 'basics' of makeup products. Lipstick, Eyebrow pencil, Blush-on, and Mascara would be enough. You don't have to purchase base products immediately, and as much as possible, seek for one to two brands only. This will help to determine what suits your face the best.

  4. I don't know how to use make-ups even tho I have so many make-up products. Ironic isn't it? Still, whenever someone put make-up on me, I feel prettier. The power of make-up is great way to boost confidence.

  6. Makeup is also one of the things that enables me to be confident in certain things. It allows me to perceive things differently when I am fully presentable. But I must agree that even without wearing makeup, we are all unique and beautiful. Thus, we should be proud of it.
